A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring the installation of fire sprinklers within buildings classified in occupancy group J-2 and requiring the installation of fire sprinklers in stairs and public halls of existing buildings classified in occupancy groups J-1 and J-2.
Be it enacted by the Council as follows:
Section 1. Section 27-954 of the administrative code of the city of New York, as last amended by local law number 45 for the year 1984, is amended by adding a new subdivision aa to read as follows:
aa. Buildings classified in occupancy group J-2, except those three stories or less in height with two or less dwelling units between one-hour fire separations. On or before August 31, 2002, fire sprinklers shall be installed in all stairs and public halls, as the terms "stairs" and "public halls" are defined in the housing maintenance code, within buildings three stories or more in height that are classified in occupancy group J-2 and are existing on or before January 1, 1998.
§2. Paragraph 1 of subdivision l of such section of such code, as amended by local law number 16 for the year 1984, is amended to read as follows:
(1) Buildings classified in residential occupancy [groups J-2 and] group J-3 shall be exempt from this provision provided all spaces classified in storage occupancy group B-2 exceeding one thousand square feet have been sprinklered in accordance with the requirements of this subchapter.
§3. Subdivision t of such section of such code, as added by local law number 16 for the year 1984, is amended to read as follows:
(t) Buildings classified in occupancy group J-1. On or before August 31, 2002, fire sprinklers shall be installed in all stairs and public halls, as the terms "stairs" and "public hall" are defined in the housing maintenance code, within buildings three stories or more in height that are classified in occupancy group J-2 and are existing on or before January 1, 1998.
§4. This local law shall take effect three hundred sixty days from the date of enactment.
