This bill would establish an office of artificial intelligence oversight within the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (“DCWP”). The Office would be led by a director appointed by the Commissioner of Consumer and Worker Protection. The director would be required to establish a process to receive, review, and respond to complaints alleging the use of artificial intelligence (“AI”) in violation of consumer protection laws enforceable by the Commissioner; maintain an online portal to receive these complaints; recommend enforcement actions to the Commissioner or Corporation Counsel in response to these complaints, or refer complaints to other agencies, as appropriate; perform public outreach and issue consumer advisories on uses of AI to harm consumers; and recommend rules to the Commissioner that would clarify or expand the application of consumer protection laws to the use of AI. The director would publish these consumer advisories and recommended rules on DCWP’s website.
