This bill would update the New York City (“NYC”) Electrical Code by adopting the standards of the 2020 National Electrical Code, with certain amendments based on unique conditions within the City. It would also incorporate the NYC Electrical Code into the City’s Construction Codes under Title 28 of the Administrative Code. The bill would also amend licensing, permitting, enforcement, disciplinary standards, and penalties related to the electrician trade, to be consistent with standards for other trades licensed by the Department of Buildings (“DOB”), and it would remove the quorum requirement for the Electrician License Board. The bill’s technical provisions would, among other things, set forth exceptions for the use of arc fault circuit interrupters in residences and the use of manufactured wiring systems, create guidelines for the use of PVC risers in buildings, and allow a “qualified person,” as defined in the National Electrical Code, to conduct low voltage work. Additionally, this bill would amend the due date of the electric vehicle charging report required by Local Law 55 of 2024 to June 30, 2026.
